Apple iPhone SE Features, Specs & Pricing

After a few years of big phone mania Apple’s finally giving us a phone that will fit comfortably in a woman’s pocket. It’s got the same guts as an iPhone 6s, minus the size and looks an awful lot like the iPhone 5s—to the point that all the comparisons in the announcement were to the 5s and not the 6s.

Design

This phone is, from the outside, just an iPhone 5s. Same 4-inch display and same glass back and vaguely industrial lines and none of that curved glass nonsense on the front that has led to the iPhone 6 and 6s breaking every time they even look at the ground.

Camera

There was a lot of back and forth over what kind of camera the SE would feature. Now we know. It’s

Apple Pencil also works with popular apps like Mail, Notes, Procreate and Office 365 for iPad, offering new levels of creativity and productivity.

Apple’s new Smart Keyboard further extends the utility of iPad Pro, offering a full-sized keyboard in a thin, durable design so you can take it anywhere. The Smart Keyboard, available for purchase separately, attaches to iPad Pro’s innovative Smart Connector port, eliminating the need for a separate battery, on/off switch or Bluetooth pairing. The Smart Keyboard is covered in custom woven fabric and features keys that provide the accuracy, stability and satisfying key feel of standard keyboards, but is also easily foldable and can transform into a Smart Cover. The Smart Keyboard also works seamlessly with new QuickType features in iOS 9 to make typing even faster and easier.

“iPad Pro is the most advanced and powerful iPad we have ever made. Its beautiful and large 12.9-inch Retina display has 5.6 million pixels and provides an immersive experience for content and apps. The iPad Pro is far and away the fastest iOS device we have ever made — its A9X chip beats most portable PCs in both CPU and graphics tasks, but is thin and light enough to hold all day,” said

The Apple Watch: Time to See If Apple Still Has What it Takes

With Apple set to announce their brand new product, the fan named "iWatch", in only a few hours, I am writing this blog post as what likely will a farewell to the me who doesn't see the point in owning a smart watch. What do I mean? Well over the many Apple product announcement events I have experienced in my short lifetime, be it for a brand new product or just an update, I have noticed that Apple is incredibly good in selling people on ideas. I might not have thought I needed a tablet at all, but as soon as the iPad was released I just had to get one. And with iPad sales topping over 225 million to date worldwide, obviously I wasn't the only person who felt this way.

Starting all the way back with the iPod, Apple has been able to dominate almost any market they entered, basically on just the idea that their products were better. It shows through in their high prices, elegant boxes, and even the way they talk about their products. One of the things that made Steve Jobs so successful and such a genius CEO was the way which he

Best Laptop For Under Or Around $500?

Q:  I’m 13 years old, I’m going into high school next fall. It’s tradition in my family to receive a computer when entering high school and the child always get to chose. So, I was wondering if maybe you had some advice for choosing the right laptop, because this laptop is supposed to take me through college or until I can buy a new one with my own money. Plus the laptop can’t be too pricey (I'm looking for something about $500 max). If you can help me I would be grateful. Also, I have some preferences for my first laptop, some of them being that the laptop can’t have any plastic, a full keyboard is required, a camera, and it has to be durable. Thank you so much even if you can’t help me, I appreciate you taking time out of your day to read my email.

A: Ok, so sorry that I took a little while to respond but I wanted to make sure that I had done my research and asked around before I started making recommendations. Finding an all metal (or non-plasticy) laptop for around $500 is actually really hard, and quite near impossible actually. When you said non-plastic I immediately thought of the MacBook Air by Apple, however, with a price tag of around $900 for the 11” entry level model it is hardly within your price range. But first, since you also said that you didn't know much about computers I just want to provide you with a little info on what the differences are between different laptops these days. The operating system or OS which a computer uses is a very big thing when it comes to choosing a computer. While there may be hundreds of different computers available to choose from, there are only three main operating systems which you can choose from: Google Chrome OS, Mac OS, and Windows 8. Though Apple only allows Mac OS to come installed on computers that they make, Google and Microsoft let computer manufacturers like HP, Toshiba, Asus, Lenovo, Acer, or Dell to ship their computers pre-installed with Google Chrome OS or Windows 8. Because each of the three operating systems available are so radically different from each other, I would personally recommend you take a trip to your local computer store (Staples, Target, RadioShack, etc) to try out some computers and see which one you like.

Rather than now spend the time to try and explain all of the other features of a laptop which you might want to consider such as screen size, battery life or memory, here’s a link to a website which explains it all rather nicely. Anyways, I hope that somewhat helped to clear it up. Here are the laptops I thought looked the best that fell within or near your price range:

Microsoft Windows OS:

Google Chromebook OS:

Apple Mac OS

I hope this helps give you a good direction to start looking. Good luck!

Apple Announces iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus—The Biggest Advancements in iPhone History

Dramatically Thin Design Features Stunning Retina HD Displays, Powerful A8 Chip, Advanced Cameras & Apple Pay

CUPERTINO, California—September 9, 2014—Apple® today announced iPhone® 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the biggest advancements in iPhone history, featuring two new models with stunning 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch Retina HD displays, and packed with innovative technologies in an all-new dramatically thin and seamless design. The new iPhones feature a precision unibody enclosure of anodized aluminum that conforms seamlessly with the shaped glass of the display, resulting in a completely smooth and continuous surface. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are engineered to be the thinnest ever, delivering a bigger display in a design that is still comfortable to hold and easy to use.

Packed with innovative new technologies, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus include: the Apple-designed A8 chip with second generation 64-bit desktop-class architecture for blazing fast performance and power efficiency; advanced iSight® and FaceTime® HD cameras; ultrafast wireless technologies; and Apple Pay™, an easier way to simply and securely make payments with just the touch of a finger.¹ Both models include iOS 8, the latest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, featuring a simpler, faster and more intuitive user experience with new Messages and Photos features, QuickType™ keyboard, a new Health app, Family Sharing and iCloud Drive℠.

“iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are the biggest advancements in iPhone history,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The iPhone is the most loved smartphone in the world with the highest customer satisfaction in the industry and we are making it much better in every way. Only Apple can combine the best hardware, software and services at this unprecedented level and we think customers are going to love it.”

For the first time iPhone is available in two new sizes: iPhone 6 features a stunning 4.7-inch Retina® HD display with 1334 x 750 resolution, providing 38 percent more viewing area than iPhone 5s, while iPhone 6 Plus features an even bigger 5.5-inch Retina HD display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, providing 88 percent more viewing area and nearly three times the pixels than iPhone 5s. The Retina HD displays offer advanced technologies including higher contrast for deeper blacks and dual-domain pixels for more accurate colors at wider viewing angles.

With second generation 64-bit desktop-class architecture, the all-new A8 chip offers faster performance and is more energy efficient, delivering higher sustained performance with great battery life. With Metal™, a new graphics technology in iOS 8, developers can take performance of the A8 chip even further to bring console-class 3D games to iPhone. The A8 chip also includes a new, powerful Apple-designed image signal processor that enables advanced camera and video features.

Both models include the M8 motion coprocessor that gathers motion data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, compass and the new barometer, which senses air pressure to provide relative elevation. The M8 motion coprocessor can continuously measure your motion data, even when the device is asleep, saving battery life for fitness apps that use the sensors all day. With iOS 8, motion data from M8 appears in the Health app so you can see how many flights of stairs you've climbed, or how far you've walked or run. Developers can use CoreMotion APIs that take advantage of M8 and HealthKit to create apps that help you take better care of your health and fitness.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus introduce Apple Pay, an easy way to securely pay for physical goods and services in stores or apps with just the touch of a finger. Users can pay securely and conveniently in stores by simply holding the phone near the contactless reader while keeping a finger on Touch ID™; there is no need to unlock your iPhone or launch an app. With Apple Pay, you can also make one-touch purchases within apps, without having to enter credit card or shipping information. All payment information is kept private, encrypted and stored securely in the Secure Element, a chip inside the new iPhones.

The iSight camera gets even better with a new sensor featuring Focus Pixels for faster autofocus, making it easier to quickly capture any moment. iPhone 6 Plus users will also benefit from optical image stabilization technology that compensates for hand shake in low light and works with iOS 8 to reduce subject motion. High-definition video on iPhone improves with faster frame rates up to 60fps for 1080p video and 240fps for slo-mo, as well as continuous autofocus, cinematic video stabilization and time-lapse video. The FaceTime HD camera now captures over 80 percent more light with a new sensor, larger f/2.2 aperture and advanced new features including burst mode and HDR video.

With faster LTE download speeds of up to 150 Mbps, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users can browse, download and stream content faster. The new iPhones also support high-quality voice calls over LTE (VoLTE) as well as Wi-Fi calling.² With support for up to 20 LTE wireless bands—more than any other smartphone in the world—the new models make it easier to experience high-speed networks around the world. Both iPhones also include 802.11ac Wi-Fi with speeds up to 433 Mbps and Bluetooth 4.0.³

The new iPhones come with iOS 8, the biggest release since the launch of the App Store℠, delivering a simpler, faster and more intuitive user experience and new features including QuickType keyboard, a new Health app, Family Sharing and iCloud Drive. With more than 4,000 new APIs, iOS 8 allows developers to further customize the user experience with major extensibility features and robust frameworks such as HealthKit and HomeKit. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users also have access to the revolutionary App Store, which offers more than 1.3 million apps to iPhone, iPad® and iPod touch® users in 155 countries around the world.

Best Tech of 2013: A Year End Wrap-Up of the Biggest and Best Technology Releases of 2013

The year is almost over, and like most, 2013 was a year full of surprises, successes, and disappointments. This was equally true when it came to the new products that tech companies released to the public. Here is my list of what I thought were the best and biggest products of 2013.

Cameras

With the release of their pair of "smart lenses", Sony took a completely new approach to smartphone photography. Will this be the way more cameras work in the coming years?

Though Canon didn't update many of their DSLR camera lines this year, the newly released 70D, featuring a brand new dual pixel autofocus technology, might hint at what direction Canon plans on taking their entire lineup in the coming year. Can't wait to see what 2014 holds for Canon!

Smartphones & Mobile Accessories

Though Samsung's attempted launch of the smartwatch, dubbed "Galaxy Gear", fell flat, their two leading smartphone lines continue to fly off of the shelves. Whether you want a smartphone or a phablet, they have you covered.

Apple's yearly update to their iPhone line was met with the usual roar of combined outrage and praise. Unlike the 5c (which is essentially a iPhone 5 with a splash of color), the 5s actually introduced a few new features to the smartphone world, namely the power of 64bit processing.

Pebble Smartwatch:
Funded through the power of Kickstarter, the Pebble Smartwatch is the first truly successful wearable technology to hit the market (sorry Galaxy Gear, maybe next year). Where other smartwatches have tried to essentially be a smartphone on your wrist, the Pebble has embraced simplicity and somehow it worked.

Media Devices & Gaming Platforms

Xbox One:
Finally, after 8 years of waiting, Microsoft updated their ever-popular Xbox line with the release of the Xbox One. While many people were disappointed once they saw the huge increase in price compared to the modest increase in specs, the update was still a big deal considering how long we had to wait for it.

Sony PS4:

Coming in at $100 less than its arch nemesis Xbox One, Sony's Playstation 4 has also received slightly better reviews than the Xbox One. There shouldn't be any rush to come to a conclusion though; given Microsoft's and Sony's track record of updating their respective gaming platforms we should have several years before the next generation is released.

Google Chromecast:

Google jumped into the media streaming device market this year with their release of the Chromecast. Costing less than half of what its competitors (mainly the Apple TV and Roku HD) sell for and supporting virtually every major operating system, the Chromecast shows us that Google doesn't mess around when it releases a new product.

Desktops, Laptops, & Tablets

Apple's New Mac Pro:
While mocked by some for its exorbitantly high price tag and resemblance to either a tissue box or Darth Vader's helmet, the release of the new Mac Pro marked the first time that Apple has really changed anything up and stepped outside the box (literally in this case) since the passing of Steve Jobs.

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX:
With extremely competitive pricing, near instant customer service thanks to the "Mayday" button, and a revolutionary display, the Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 10" lineup just got a lot hotter. Of the three main tablet lineups on the market (iPad, Nexus, and Kindle), the Kindle HDX line saw the biggest jump forward when its third generation hit the market this year.

Apps, Video Games & Software

Grand Theft Auto V:
Receiving extremely high critical acclaim and being the fastest selling entertainment product in history easily earns the fifth installment of the Grand Theft Auto series a spot on this list. I mean come on; the game generated more than $800 million in worldwide revenue in just the first 24 after it was released!

Apple iOS 7 & Mavericks:
Apple redressed its mobile operating system in bright (what some have called tacky) colors all while adding new features and redesigning their included apps. On the Mac OS front, Apple running out of cats to name their operating systems after also marked the end of having to pay to upgrade your computer's software, and another step towards the likely merger of iOS and Mac OS in the increasingly near future.

Vine - Create & Share Beautiful Looping Videos:
Released a year ago this coming January (it was only a year ago?), the Vine app was the fourth most downloaded app in the AppStore this past year. It's amazing what people can do in just 6 seconds.

The A7 chip’s 64-bit architecture and support for OpenGL ES version 3.0 unlocks game console-like visual effects. The new iPads also feature the M7 motion coprocessor that gathers data from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass to offload work from the A7 for improved power efficiency.

Both new iPads feature two antennas to support Multiple-In-Multiple-Out (MIMO) technology, bringing twice the Wi-Fi performance to iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display at a blazingly fast data rate up to 300 Mbps.² Cellular models also come with expanded LTE coverage to accommodate even more LTE networks worldwide, while continuing to deliver comprehensive support for other fast cellular technology around the world (DC-HSDPA, HSPA+), all in a single model.³

The new iPads come with iOS 7, featuring a stunning new user interface, completely redesigned with an elegant color palette, distinct, functional layers and subtle motion that make it feel more alive. iOS 7 has hundreds of great new features, including Control Center, Notification Center, improved Multitasking, AirDrop®, enhanced Photos, Safari®, Siri® and introduces iTunes Radio℠, a free Internet radio service based on the music you listen to on iTunes®.⁴
